Staying Close When You're Far Apart

Distance doesn't have to mean drifting — if you stay intentional about knowing each other.

When you live together, you update your picture of each other constantly — you overhear a call, notice a new habit, share a meal and learn something new. At a distance, those passive updates disappear. You have to be intentional about them instead.

Go Deeper Than the Daily Recap

The "how was your day?" call is essential but not sufficient. Days compressed into summaries lose all their texture. Try mixing in questions that go a level deeper: "What surprised you this week?" or "Is there anything on your mind you haven't brought up yet?" These create the kind of conversation that actually updates your map of each other.

Write Down What They Share

When your partner tells you something meaningful on a call, write it down. Not to archive them — but so you can actually hold onto it. Being able to ask "How did that thing with your manager turn out?" a week later signals something powerful: I was listening. I remembered. You matter to me even from here.

Build Shared Rituals

A standing Sunday call, texting each other one photo a day, watching the same show the same night — the ritual matters less than the consistency. What you're building is proof that even across the distance, you're still doing this together.

Know your partner deeper.

Save the details that matter and never forget the small things.
